According to Alberta Labour, homeowners requiring work on their roofs should make an informed decision when hiring a contractor. Possible recommendations are:
Ask friends, family members, and neighbours.
Ask for references. Was the job completed on time and at the agreed upon price? If the contractor does not or will not give references, don't hire them.
Ensure the contractor does not ask for payment "under the table", and get a written contract with buyer's right to cancel written on the front of the contract.
Use reputable companies. Being a member of a recognized roofing organization and/or a member of the Better Business Bureau is always a good indication .
Is the contractor experienced ? Do they have the knowledge to complete the job properly?
Ask the contractor questions. Are you confident in his abilities, reassured by his replies? If not try another contractor.
Does the contractor have WCB coverage? If not, you can be liable for any injuries to workers while on your roof!
Get proof of protection from these risks. Get a WCB clearance letter.
Don't always make price the bottom line. The lowest price might mean the contractor is cutting corners. You get what you pay for.
Avoid contractors who promise low prices but provide nothing in writing and ask for payment in cash with no receipt.
Never agree to anything until you get it in writing. A contract is important.
Obtain warranties or written guarantees before final payment, and get a phone number and address for possible follow up work.
